Describing Ryanair’s new routes as a ‘$800 million investment in Budapest’, directly creating 240 new jobs, indirectly 4,000, Director of Commercial, Jason McGuinness, celebrated the tenth anniversary of Ryanair having a base in the Hungarian capital by announcing eight new routes for summer 2022.
The new destinations are Bournemouth, Shannon, Turin, Cologne, Stockholm Arlanda, Kraków, Riga and Kaunas. In all, more than 500 Ryanair flights a week will be serving Budapest from late March onwards.
McGuinness also announced a lightning Ryanair sale until this Sunday, 27 February, with fares from €19.99/7,199 forints.
Demand creates traffic
While Ryanair have signed long-term agreements with key hubs London Stansted, Brussels-Charleroi and Bergamo until 2028-31, McGuinness would not be drawn on any specific arrangement with Budapest, only to underline that demand is the main motivation behind this latest announcement.
The Director of Commercial also pointed out that staff and aircraft remained in place here in Budapest during the pandemic, in preparation for a quick rebound. Eight planes will be based here, including two new Boeing 737 8-200 ‘Gamechangers’, which burn 16% less fuel and generate 40% fewer noise emissions.
