Three-time Olympic champion Tibor Benedek, who died two years ago at the age of 47, is to be commemorated with the renaming of a public space after him. Plans call for part of Íves út in Újpest, where the young Benedek first played in 1996, to honour the later coach of the Hungarian team.
Near Aquaworld, at the edge of Budapest city limits, in District IV, a section of Íves út will carry the name of Tibor Benedek if a current proposal is carried out. The sporting legend succumbed to pancreatic cancer in June 2020 after a glittering career in and outside the pool for water-polo teams in Hungary and Italy.
