Now and then, animals make surprise appearances around town, perhaps the odd fox roaming the streets, maybe even a wild boar. But it’s rare for any creature to make the leap onto a passing tram, as a family of ducks did recently. Found by the stop of the number 14 at Gyöngyösi utca, there were taken in by the driver, then by the Budapest Transport Company, who delivered them to a conservation centre in nearby Újpest.

During the pandemic, empty streets and buildings allowed various creatures to encroach on urban spaces, such as the ducks who went for a swim at the Lukács Baths.

Even afterwards, there were reported animal sightings, most notably the wayward penguin who got lost after escaping from Budapest Zoo.

Now a family of ducks has been found by the number 14 tram at Gyöngyösi utca. After the driver captured them, the traffic controllers of the city’s transport network took them to the Animal & Nature Conservation Service in Újpest. The ducks were then released into the wild at nearby Káposztásmegyer, by an area of streams and woods.
