After essential maintenance, the city’s popular Cogwheel Railway will be setting off once more from its terminus at Városmajor from Saturday 30 April. The fire-red conveyance, part of the city’s regular transport network, will be following its usual route up the hill to Széchenyi-hegy, but the service will only run early in the morning or late at night if a passenger books through a special app.

Partly opened in 1874 then fully from 1890, the Cogwheel Railway has long been a popular attraction, taking in panoramic views from the Buda hills and crossing with the Children’s Railway. See our history of this Swiss-inspired excursion option here.

The railway is designated number 60 in the city’s tram network, meaning that passengers can use a standard transport ticket or pass.

According to the new schedule, valid from Saturday, 30 April, those wishing to ride the vehicle before 5.30am on weekday mornings, before 7.30am at weekends, or after 10pm all week, must indicate through an app or call +36 1 3 255 255 no later than 30 minutes before their intended departure. The Cogwheel will not run before or after those times otherwise.
