A beautiful 150-year-old sycamore standing at the prime location of Kodály körönd has just been given a essential repairs by the expert staff at FŐKERT, responsible for greenery around the capital. It dates back to long before the time when composer Zoltán Kodály, a colleague of Béla Bartók’s, lived next door. The elegant rond-point on Andrássy út later took his name.

The team at FŐKERT, who oversee all parks, trees and greenery around Budapest, have been at work caring for a historic sycamore on Kodály körönd. They pruned the canopy, then cleaned, cared for and closed off the lower half of the tree.

Thanks to their intervention, the deterioration of the old giant has slowed, but the top will need to be pruned again.

Weighing about 30 tons, it will put so much strain on the weakened roots that the tree could crack. This is why the top is being lightened by five tons every week and the rot and damage are being re-treated.

The tree dates back 150 years – some sycamores can live for 350 or 400.
