Right in the heart of Budapest, within steps of Kálvin tér and the National Museum, a new park on Bástya utca provides a playground, sports court and promenade to families who would otherwise have to trek out further afield for recreation. There’s even a gallery displaying urban history, at this spot where the city walls once stood.

Covering more than 800 square metres, Bástya park not only offers an oasis of greenery in the city centre but also delineates the former city walls. Small cannonballs, earthenware, wells and bones were unearthed while it was being landscaped.

Once nicknamed the assassin’s walk, this former military feature has now been rebuilt so that anyone can go and play the hero in the story, defending Budapest from the enemy.

sports court and playground sit below, with an archeologically themed sandpit in addition to the usual slide and climbing frame.

An eco approach features throughout, with 23 new trees, green walls and rainwater irrigation. Open by day, the park closes at night to protect the archaeological site. You'll find it at 1056 Budapest, Bástya utca.
