The winners have just been announced for the annual CheckINN Tourism Innovation Competition organised by the Hungarian Tourism Foundation, rewarding talented Hungarian students for their pioneering solutions in the contemporary travel industry. Teams of three had to come up with a novel approach to hospitality, mobility and active tourism, with scholarships worth three million forints at stake in each of the three categories.

In addition to finding the most inspirational ideas, the CheckINN Tourism Innovation Competition aims to encourage innovative thinking and entrepreneurship. New categories are introduced each year, so that aspiring students can address current problems.

The competition is not only open to those majoring in tourism and hospitality, but in other disciplines, too, ensuring a healthy diversity of ideas.

Follow that dream

Not only was there more and more work, but more and more quality work, where sustainability and digitisation were the key words. The competition is a great opportunity for students to present their ideas to the general public and investors, so they might one day be implemented,” said jury member Bálint Erdei, Managing Director of the Association of Hungarian Travel Agencies.

The applications were judged in two rounds. Criteria included the novelty of the idea, its feasibility in business and its long-term sustainability.

A bridge to the future

The CheckINN Tourism Competition is a bridge between the profession and students. As many young people prefer to stay in Hungary, the competition is a great opportunity to gain professional experience, a huge help in finding the right job further down the line,” said Noémi Ilyés, Professional Director of CheckINN’s innovative tourism programme.

At the awards ceremony, last year’s winning teams were also invited. The members of Márminálunk have already turned part of their prize into a business development, putting their scholarship to good use. Their aim is to create a platform where craft activities can be promoted and made more easily accessible to users.

The Partners team from Miskolc University took first prize in the Hotel Hospitality category. Laura Madarász, Kristóf Péter Fodor and Tamás Bencsik created Amanda, a complex, customised virtual assistant dealing with all hotel-booking queries. Amanda can help with personalised activity recommendations during your stay, room service and show you the availability of the hotel’s many facilities.

The Aroma Adventurers, Ede Márk Fauszt from the Budapest Economic University, and Marcell Pálos and Luca Sára Ferenczi from ELTE, won in the Active Tourism category. Their idea is to trap scents with a special pump and use it to create aromatic tours in the form of a game.

Students from Budapest’s Corvinus University were awarded top prize in the Transport Mobility category. The female members of the Wheelp team, Fanni Klisóczki, Borbála Gáspár and Regina Horváth, designed an app that helps you share your unused items of transport, allowing you to connect with people in town.

The CheckINN Tourism Competition 2021 is supported by the National Talent Programme.
