A new figurine by Mihajlo Kolodko at the Buda foot of Elizabeth Bridge shows a rat spraypainting the word 'lecsó’ on the wall. The guerrilla sculptor is known for creating statuettes and leaving them in apt locations around the city, although since his identity has been unveiled, Kolodko has carried out commissions from companies and district councils. Given that lecsó is the Hungarian equivalent of ratatouille, his new work could reference the revered Pixar cartoon – but who knows?

Guerrilla sculptor Mihajlo Kolodko is used to causing a stir when he leaves his figurines around town. The gun-toting meerkat by the statue of Columbo, a kidnapped Lisa Simpson and Franz Liszt with his suitcase at Budapest’s airport of the same name, all exude gentle humour with perhaps a nod towards cultural history.

Since becoming a well-known figure himself, Kolodko has collaborated with bodies such as the District VII council and Dreher beer to illustrate aspects of urban tradition.

This latest work, however, is again a bit of a mystery as neither the location nor the figure itself point towards a specific reference. As always, though, it does leave Budapest guessing...
