What is a stroopwafel? Sold on every street corner in Amsterdam, they are crispy wafers, whose heavenly aroma wafts up from the soft caramel syrup that holds their thin layers together. Once you taste the biscuit and feel that sticky sensation, the flavours will stay with you forever. And now you can find them here in Budapest!

According to some records, the ancient Greeks ate sweets similar to stroopwafels. The name itself is of French origin, the very first real waffle recipe dating back to the 14th century.

The real stroopwafel, where the caramel syrup is locked in between two slices of wafer, comes from 18th-century Gouda. In reality, it’s a tasty by-product of the infamous Dutch thrift, as initially any leftovers from bread were used to bake the wafers.

In Budapest you can also buy stroopwafels at some grocery stores, but fresh, locally made ones are incomparably crispier and tastier. Now you can find them at Waffle Wonderland, at an outlet which started as an ice-cream parlour, Grosso, in the summer of 2021.

A collaboration between tenant Bence Szilágyi and confectioner-owner, Edit Zs Németh, the Hungarian version of this wonderful delicacy has arrived. It has been slightly modified for Magyar tastes, as the original version also contains molasses, too sour for the local palate.

Instead, they created a recipe in which the traditional caramel syrup is used. It can be ordered with Belgian dark-chocolate syrup, various candies and seeds on top for extra crispiness.

If you want to create your own version with the toppings available, they also offer the option of baking you a wafer which you can decorate with flavoured goods, almond chips, caramel pieces or coloured candies.

The delicious sweets are available in two different sizes (HUF 590/890) and in gluten-free versions (HUF 890/1,190). Now in the Christmas season, you can buy them in a festive bag. The décor is similarly Christmassy, the owners planning to change its appearance on a regular basis, to attract more passing trade.

Good coffee is another must with stroopwafels, as the authentic way to eat them is to place the biscuit on top of the cup, in this case a paper cup, for a few minutes so that the steam penetrates the dough and softens the syrup. Here, the Cirkusz breakfast bar provides the Brazilian, fruity arabica
