What’s up? How you doin’? or simply Mizu? If you’ve seen Friends, then you’re probably familiar with this iconic Joey Tribbiani pick-up line. Now Matt Le Blanc has found his rightful rival as Hungarian singer, Tomi Flour, has got way further with his hit song featuring the Magyar equivalent of How you doin’? Mizu, mizu, mizu? Learn to recognise this useful, everyday Hungarian slang word on the streets of Budapest. It’s widely used among the young and cool to ask what’s new in a short and snappy way.

So Mizu? or Mizujs? is probably the most common phrase to start a conversation in a friendly manner. It’s often used by teenagers and the younger generation so the elderly wouldn’t go for it, but nowadays it’s made its way to daily conversational Hungarian speech.

But guys, be careful! Bringing in Matt Le Blanc from Friends was no coincidence. Sometimes asking a passing girl Mizu? with a confident smile can come off as flirty. So, unless that’s your intention, don’t overuse it with complete strangers.

But, all in all, it’s a rather friendly way of asking someone how they've been or what’s new. If you hear Mizu, you can be assured that the person asking it wants to establish a friendly connection.

Other versions of this word also exist such as Hogysmint?, Mi a helyzet?, Mi a dörgés? are each quite common in everyday speech. However, Mizu is way cooler and probably the most up-to-date version, so if you want to socialise with Hungarians around, open the conversation with Mizu and you'll be fine…
