Opened on Rottenbiller utca within easy reach of City Park, Kutya egy hely welcomes all visitors, on four legs or two. Greeting them at the door will be Dália, who belongs to café founder Tünde, and Troy, companion to her friend, Tomi. This genial foursome oversee operations at this canine-focused drinkery.

With dog numbers rising in Budapest, ever more ruin bars and outdoor spots have been putting out doggy bowls for thirsty pets. Kutya egy hely is the logical conclusion to that process, the canine equivalent of cat cafés so popular these days.

Inside, dogs walk up and down if they were at home, with a spacious playhouse downstairs, ideal if it’s raining outdoors. This can accommodate seven or eight at any one time, while at street level, there’s a bar counter and smaller tables, the gallery above equipped with bean bags and toilets.

Dália’s owner Tünde thought out the venue in great detail, raising it from a pipe dream to a viable concern. Along the way, Tünde’s good friend Tomi, got on board, along with his mixed-breed puppy, Troy.

Kutya egy hely is far more than a place where water is provided for dogs. Along with the playground, there’s a dog daycare, all-day supervision (8am-6pm) for 4,500 forints or an hour for 800. For now, this is only possible on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but the plan is to offer it every weekday.

You can start the day with a sandwich for breakfast, a piece of cake later on, with beer, wine and cocktails also available early evening plus, of course, coffee. Dogs can be provided with a bed, a toothbrush and smaller bones from the counter.

Visitors don’t need to be dog owners, just people who love being around dogs who, in turn, are grateful for the attention. Kutya egy hely also has links to various dog shelters and organisations.

Open and adoption days, birthdays and charity events are also programmed.
