The last brushstrokes have just been added to a huge firewall mural on Krisztina körút in Buda, depicting heroic scientist Katalin Karikó. As part of the upcoming Brain Bar festival of the future, Karikó, the Hungarian biochemist who made an invaluable contribution to the development of a Covid vaccine, was selected as the subject matter to inspire young people in their careers.

Covering 220 square metres of a firewall at Krisztina körút 30 near Vérmező in Buda, a likeness of eminent scientist scientist Katalin Karikó has been created by Színes Város, the group behind a citywide series of murals.

The painting needed 11 days to complete and 197 litres of paint. "Working in a public space is exciting because many people immediately have their say on the work in progress,” said project chief Péter Flór. "It was especially surprising that as we filled in the drawing with colours and the picture started to come together, almost everyone realised who it was.”

Karikó, currently in the reckoning for a Nobel Prize for her life-saving work, responded on her own Twitter feed by saying, "It was a surprise, a big surprise!"

This year’s Brain Bar will be held at Millenáris on 9-10 September. Founded in 2015, this ’Festival of the Future’ aims to provide young people with the knowledge and inspiration to plan their lives and careers.
