Budapest’s green makeover continues apace with yet another urban square being relandscaped and made more cycle-friendly, Bakáts tér between the Danube and the Nagykörút.

Long earmarked for renovation, Bakáts tér will see an eightfold increase in its green space, from 225 square metres to 1,730, as part of a major makeover due to conclude in 2022.

The number of cycle storage places increase almost tenfold, and the Bubi cycle-hire hub will be moved to another location. Backdropped by the 19th-century St Francis of Assisi Parish Church, the square will function more as a communal space, with less car traffic, new businesses will open and drinking fountains will be provided for residents and their dogs.

Benches and communal boards for chess and the Hungarian game of malom will also be installed, and all facilities will be made more accessible for those with reduced mobility and vision.
