Unveiled this May on the Danube side of trendy Újlipótváros, American-run Gaby’s is now picking up a regular crowd. After attending a packed opening night, we now lingered a little longer to check out the menu and sip a gin or two.

Bryan Wilson’s is another Budapest story, coming from California, falling in love with the city and deciding to set up here, bringing his own experience to attract a diverse crowd.

Gaby’s is his first venture, a relaxed bar/restaurant where it was SRO on opening night – as we reported at the time.

Bryan and team aren’t characterised by cold professionalism, but they really enjoy what they’re doing and put everyone in a good mood from breakfast through to 10pm. And if there’s no-one playing a few songs on stage, The bar's namesake dog, Gaby, might wander across it to find another comfortable spot for the duration.

As for those breakfasts, a large avocado sandwich (HUF 2,200 HUF), omelette (HUF 2,100) or French toast (HUF 2,000) will set you up for the day, beneath tree shade, gazing out over the Danube.

The menu continues in eclectic fashion, mom’s mandarin salad (HUF 1,750) the pick of the lunch-to-evening range, an old family recipe. Hungry carnivores may rather devour a BBQ pork sandwich  (HUF 2,000) and once things start to buzz and the post-work and party crowds mingle, it’s time to investigate the gin selection with a little fizz.

If you’re here for Sunday brunch, bottomless mimosa might be the way to go. You can take the man out of California...
