The much-needed replacement of the two bridges serving Hajógyári (‘Shipyard’) Island now seems imminent. Take a look at the visuals – from now on, accessing the Sziget Festival won’t seem like some spy exchange in East Berlin!

Year after year, festivalgoers have headed over to Hajógyári Island via K-Bridge. Recently, it was revealed to be in poor condition. The crossing, originally designed for pedestrian and train traffic, has deteriorated because of car traffic. H-Bridge is in better shape, but still far from ideal.

Now, however, both will be renovated. The details for K-Bridge have yet to be revealed, but it is an industrial monument, so it cannot be fundamentally altered, only renovated. By contrast, H-Bridge should change completely.

It will only be used by cyclists and pedestrians and will be two-deck, with the upper level accessible from Zichy Castle on Fő tér in Óbuda.

As the island is currently underused, a new cultural district will be developed in the south, with exhibition rooms and concert venues, justifying such a thorough renovation of H-Bridge.

Of particular note is that demolished pieces from the existing bridges some seven decades old will be used as the raw materials for the new crossings.
