A new three-light system for entering Hungary came into effect on 15 July. All nationals arriving from so-called ‘green’ countries, ie most in the immediate EU region apart from Romania and Bulgaria, may enter freely. Non-Hungarians coming from countries on the ‘yellow’ list, including the UK and the US, must prove that they have taken two consecutive negative coronavirus tests within the previous five days or enter 14 days’ quarantine.

The government has just announced stricter measures for everyone entering Hungary, effective as of 15 July. All nationals arriving from ‘green’ countries considered relatively safe, ie nearly all nearby EU ones except Romania and Bulgaria, may enter freely.

The UK, US, Serbia, Romania, Sweden, Portugal, Bulgaria, Norway, Russia, China and Japan are categorised as ‘yellow’, ie foreign nationals arriving from there must have taken two consecutive negative coronavirus tests within the previous five days or enter 14 days’ quarantine. Hungarians need only have taken one test.

Foreigners arriving from so-called ‘red’ countries, the western Balkans, most of Asia, Africa and South America, may not enter Hungary at all – and Hungarians need to have taken two two consecutive negative coronavirus tests within the previous five days.

The situation is under constant review.
