Nyugati station, an Eiffel-designed building set on Budapest’s busy Nagykörút, is due for a major upgrade. According to Róbert Homolya, CEO of Hungarian State Railways, MÁV: “As part of the development, more than 8,200 square metres of roof structure of the railway station will be reconstructed, the overhead line network will be renewed and the passenger information system will also be modernised. During this reconstruction, the passenger hall will be closed” .
In normal times, the station handles 18 million passengers a year and 480 trains a day. Nyugati dates back to 1877 when the Eiffel company of Paris built a glass-and-steel steam palace on the site of Budapest’s first station, opened in 1846 and later pulled down.
Nyugati serves major Hungarian destinations such as Debrecen, Szeged, Nyíregyháza, Szolnok and Vác.
