Declaring that the spread of the coronavirus in the capital had been contained, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has just announced that Budapest will begin lifting the shutdown from Monday, 18 May. He also stressed that the capital would generally follow two weeks behind the rest of Hungary when restrictions were being eased. In a separate address, Gergely Gulyás, Head of the Prime Minister’s Office, provided more detail: restaurant terraces, public playgrounds, zoos, lidos, spas and open-air museums may open. Social distancing and the wearing of masks while shopping and using public transport should still be adhered to, and supermarkets can still only be used by over-65s between 9am and noon.

In an address many had been waiting for, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán declared that Budapest may begin lifting the shutdown from 18 May. The authorities will soon decide on measures concerning shopping at markets.
