The Hungarian authorities have announced protective measures to combat any potential spread of the coronavirus epidemic. Many places of culture, leisure and entertainment are to close for the time being, and a travel ban is in place for visitors from the most affected countries, China, Italy, Iran and South Korea.
Indoor events – concerts, films, plays – involving gatherings of more than 100 people and outdoor events of more than 500 are being cancelled. Ruin bars such as Szimpla Kert and Fogas have also closed their doors. As of today, Thursday 12 March, Budapest’s universities are also closing. Shopping malls remain open, while nurseries, schools and kindergartens will make their own decisions on whether to close.
Border controls from neighbouring Schengen countries such as Austria and Slovenia are now in place. It is being stressed that these are protective measures aimed at limiting any potential spread of the coronavirus, which has led to more stringent controls being introduced around Italy and France.
