State railway company MÁV and the country’s largest bicycle organisation, the Hungarian Cycling Club, are working together to initiate a number of exciting new features for cyclists.

As part of the co-operation, cyclists and passengers can look forward to expanded bicycle transport and storage facilities, more accessible stations and the development of railway crossings and more detailed travel information.

Railway workers are also being encouraged to commute by bike. To make the idea more appealing, they will have access to new washrooms, changing rooms and lockers.

A new online interface when purchasing a ticket with MÁV will allow cyclists to see how many other riders will be boarding with their bikes, to avoid overcrowded compartments and uncomfortable jostling for space. This will be indicated by a colour scale of green-orange-red.

Of course, these are all just plans – concrete proposals will become more clear next year. What is certain is that the partnership set up between the two companies will be presenting many new ideas at the start of 2021, which will address the shortcomings of bicycle transport capacity in both the suburbs of Budapest, as well as priority tourist destinations.
