District VII is known for its street art, often linked to key elements of Hungarian history and culture. Now, a few streets from giant depictions of Empress Elisabeth, Rubik and 1956, a new mural has been unveiled on Akácfa utca to celebrate the 30th anniversary of German Reunification. The work has been created by two artists, one from Frankfurt, the other from Budapest.
The firewall painting at Akácfa utca 27 is a joint project between the German Embassy and Budapest’s dynamic Színes Város, the group responsible for many other striking murals across the city.
The illustration, showing Berliners giving fellow citizens a helping hand up to scale the Wall, backdropped by the figure 30, was conceived by Frankfurt artist, Justus Becker (aka COR), and Hungarian Katalin Benkő.
Becker has been creating murals for 20 years and runs street-art workshops while Benkő is a painter who graduated from the Hungarian University of Fine Arts and has long been involved with Színes Város.
