Despite a 97% drop in traffic in 2020 compared to 2019, Budapest Airport has confirmed that it is still going ahead with a third passenger terminal. Meanwhile, rumours of its possible sale and move into Hungarian state ownership are rife and potential investors will be cheered by the news of impending development.

Budapest Airport has not given up on developments outlined before restrictions savaged the travel industry. Plans have been revised due to the declining turnover and an uncertain future, but another passenger terminal on top of the two already operating remains on the drawing board.

In addition to a third terminal, proposals also call for the complete renovation of the airport’s surroundings and existing buildings, transport improvements and the expansion of parking facilities. Future developments will be driven by the post-epidemic recovery and passenger traffic needs, all with the goal of generating revenue in safe fashion.

New halls for baggage handling and air cargo are already complete, as well as a waiting area for budget travellers at departure gates. A tender for the much-needed renovation of the road from the city has also been announced.

All this should be attractive news for potential investors. The possible sale and state ownership of the airport have been a hot topic of late but nobody would confirm or deny these intentions.
