Once more notable for the attractions around it – music venue and party spot, the A38 Ship, the ELTE Lágymanyósi Campus – than the solitary Victims of Communism memorial within, Egyetemisták parkja (‘Student Park’) has recently been overhauled, revamped and reopened.
Two minutes from the main 4/6 tram line, this expanse of greenery around Goldmann György tér now features any number of bunches, deckchairs and welcome shade. A large five-a-side football and basketball court has also been set up, along with Teqball and ping-pong tables, and street workout equipment. You’ll even find a punch bag or two among the parallel bars, ladders and stretching towers.
A small pole provides free WiFi use within a radius of 50 metres, USB sockets have been built into the benches and lockers are available to store your valuables while you practise sport. Lighting, automatic toilets and a drinking fountain have also been installed.
Given Budapest’s role in 2019 as European Capital of Sport, many parks have been modernised in recent times – but Egyetemisták parkja trumps them all with the provision of DJ decks for you to work on your spinning skills while everyone else shoots hoops or gets in shape.
