Many new activity facilities have opened around Budapest since the city was declared European Capital of Sport for 2019. Now another has been unveiled, on a relatively undeveloped island otherwise filled with birdsong and, for one week most summers, live music coming from the Sziget Festival.
At the recent opening ceremony for the sport park on Hajógyári-sziget, it was also pointed out that 60 trees had been planted around the island, and plant beds enriched with diverse perennials. An insect facility had also been installed.
For most visitors, though, outdoor exercise is the great attraction. You can also play football, basketball and handball on the multifunctional, rubber-covered sports court, and there are two volleyball courts on grass. A ping-pong table and outdoor gym are also in place, as well as WiFi, cycle storage and toilet facilities with a nappy change.
To reach it, take the HÉV electric train from Batthyány tér to Filatorigát (journey time 10mins), walk over the bridge 3mins from the station and head to the other side of the island about 400m away.
