As of today, Monday, 16 March, Hungary is closing its borders to foreign passenger traffic overland in a bid to contain the spread of the coronavirus. Further measures to come into force after midnight tonight include the closure of all the city’s cafés and restaurants after 3pm. The only shops able to operate will be grocery stores and pharmacies. Schools, playgrounds and all places of entertainment are also closed. Passengers cannot use the front door of buses and trolleybuses to board, to avoid contact with the driver.

Following on from recent announcement concerning the closure of indoor and outdoor places of entertainment of a certain size, including concert venues and nightclubs, further draconian measures to combat the spread of the coronavirus include limits on opening times for cafés and restaurants, the closure of spas, playgrounds and all places of entertainment. Hungary has also closed its borders to all non-Hungarian passenger traffic overland.
