When we visited riverside Liz and Chain, we were so impressed we just wanted to cosy up on a plush couch with our laptop for the whole day. The atmosphere is calm and classy with huge windows letting ample sunshine inside, while providing an unbothered panorama over the Castle-crowned Buda Hills. The bar is spacious with secluded seating areas and a great selection of drinks and eats from breakfast till late at night. So really, there’s no reason not to stay awhile.
If you’re wondering about the name, let’s get that one straight. Liz and Chain is located halfway between two pretty Budapest bridges, Elizabeth and the Chain Bridge, so there's your answer. This also means that the panorama is just perfect, overlooking the slowly running river and the rolling Buda Hills. Boats float down the Danube all day and classic yellow trams pass by – the view is splendid any time of the day.
At Liz and Chain, life starts early morning, at 8am, with breakfast. With both buffet and à la carte, the selection is wide. We tried the buttermilk pancakes with whipped cream, strawberries and maple syrup – heavenly! – for 1,500 forints, poached eggs with an English muffin, oak-smoked Scottish salmon, Hollandaise sauce and chives for 2,500 forints, and blueberry chia oatmeal soaked overnight with chocolate chip, walnuts and peanut butter. The breakfast courses pair excellently with fresh fruit juice or champagne and are best devoured on the terrace when weather permits.
At 11.30am, buffet breakfast gives way to lunch courses, so at Liz and Chain, there really is always something tasty on the table. From the menu, you can choose dishes based on how hungry you are – from ‘5 MIN’ finger food through ‘10 MIN’ meals to share to ‘20 MIN’ substantial helpings.
Between 3pm and 7pm, you can choose the Sparkling Danube special offer with unlimited Hungarian sparkling wine, unlimited tea and coffee and two slices of cake. Happy Hour arrives at 5pm, when cocktails, wines and beers are offered at 50% discount. So just sit back and sip, and sip, and sip.
