The Budapest Urban Games is a popular one-day event taking place on 31 August. Sports lovers can join an elevated running race along the scenic Citadella promenade or participate in streetball championships and five-a-side football on Klauzál tér in the Jewish Quarter. The biggest attraction is the cross-Danube swim, which involves jumping into the river on the Pest side of Liberty Bridge and emerging a few minutes later on the Buda embankment. Register to take part or just visit the many attractions and enjoy the spectacle.

As Budapest is the European Capital of Sports for 2019, this year the Budapest Urban Games (BUG) will have extra significance when it’s organised for the fourth time running. On 31 August, the whole city turns into a huge sports centre, with numerous active events awaiting amateurs and professionals alike.

The biggest attraction each year is the swim across the Danube by scenic Liberty Bridge. To plunge into this aquatic endeavour, participants should be over 18 years of age with considerable swimming experience, and will be required to present a valid medical certificate.

If you prefer competing on land, a running race takes place on the same day, offering athletes the chance to tackle the panoramic path around Citadella, over 5.5, 11 or 21 kilometres. The Budapest Urban Games is free for everyone, but to secure a spot for the swimming, running or football, you must pay a deposit which will be transferred back to you when you show up on the day.
