One of the most prestigious races in world cycling, the Giro d’Italia will set off from Budapest in 2022. The capital was meant to host in 2020, postponed due to Covid restrictions. Dating back to 1909, this historic sports event sees riders covering the whole of Italy, lakes and Alps included, in a bid to win that day’s coveted pink jersey. Along with the Grande Partenza send-off, Hungary will be hosting two more of the 20-plus stages, dates and details to be confirmed on Wednesday, 3 November.

One of the three grand tours in world cycling, including the Tour de France and Vuelta a España, the Giro d’Italia takes place over three weeks. With more details to be announced on Wednesday, 3 November, the Hungarian capital will host the start of the 2022 event on Friday, 6 May.

As in 2020, plans call for stages two and three to take in Győr, Székesfehérvár and Nagykanizsa. The whole circus then moves to Italy, with the final stages rumoured to be earmarked for the north-east, near Slovenia.

Budapest is in good company – other host start cities have included Monte Carlo, Nice and Amsterdam. Watch this space for further details on when and where to watch next year’s race!
