The number of restaurants catering to a vegan clientele in Budapest is on the rise. From hot dogs to burgers and goulash soup, many a favourite dish now comes free from animal ingredients. However, the majority of these eateries are mostly focused on food, soft drinks and smoothies – but not alcohol.
The newly opened Szabad Bistro breaks away from this trend by featuring a strong line of drinks that haven’t been in contact with animal products, such as gelatine, during the manufacturing process. You can ask for different types of craft beers, pálinka and Baileys made with almond milk. Freshly pressed almond milk goes into the coffee, too. Meanwhile, cocktails such as mojito are served with eco-friendly, biodegradable straw. Gluten-free beer also features.
The menu is focused on street food and bistro-style treats. American beet salad (950 forints) is made of beetroot, orange, cabbage and coriander, all mixed with a sauce comprising sunflower oil and black salt.
Then, a variety of beans, corns and jalapeño peppers are used for the chili beans à la Szabad Bistro, all slathered with a chili-chocolate tomato sauce. The vegan version of the Hungarian classic, Hortobágyi pancake (1,250 forints), comes with stewed seitan, beer used for the dough. Tiramisu is offered for dessert, vegan all round, of course.
There are also pesto paninis (740 forints), bagels with hummus (850 forints) and sandwiches with beetroot and tzatziki (950 forints).
Keeping in line with a sustainable lifestyle, food can be ordered for takeaway only if you bring your own container.
