This Saturday sees the prime fixture of the Hungarian football season being played in Budapest. The big city derby between fierce rivals Ferencváros and Újpest kicks off at 7:30pm at the Groupama Aréna, with the home club unbeaten and the top of the league. Visitors Újpest always raise their game here, and a fiery atmosphere is guaranteed.

Opened in 2014, the Groupama Aréna is the most significant football ground to open in Hungary for 60 years. It currently serves as the national stadium while the Puskás Ferenc Stadion is being rebuilt for Euro 2020. It was here that Hungary famously beat Norway to qualify for Euro 2016.

At press time, a full house of 23,700 was expected for the Budapest derby this Saturday evening between Ferencváros and Újpest – although you may still find a few tickets going at agencies such as Ticket Express/Eventim around the city. Photo ID and registration are prerequisites before you purchase.

The stadium is next door to Népliget station on blue metro line M3 – though renovation works mean that this closes at weekends. Tram 1, that passes by the transport hubs of Közvágóhíd and Puskás Ferenc Stadion, also calls at Népliget.
