New outdoor sports courts have just been opened at Budapest’s City Park, part of the long-term Liget Project to reconfigure this extensive recreational space behind Heroes’ Square. Set in the park’s south-east corner, where the main arteries of Ajtósi Dürer sor and Dózsa György út meet, the pitches are complemented by an outdoor public gym and four-lane athletics track. Also planned is an illuminated running course for safe exercise after dark. By day, local schools will be given first priority on use of the courts and equipment.
These new features replace the dilapidated paths and jogging circuits that once looped around this corner. Football, basketball and streetball teams can also look forward to changing rooms, showers and drinking fountains being installed.
This Hungarian-language video shows the new sports park being put to good use by local athletes.
Beyond renovating the recreational facilities, Liget plans involve the construction of a new Museum of Ethnography and National Gallery, as well as the establishment of a House of Hungarian Music.
