There’s no better place in the world for a scoop of rosé spritzer than Budapest. In the city’s party vortex, a newly opened ice-cream parlour sells frosty summertime treats with a twist. Gelato comes in the flavours of Jack Daniel’s, Aperol or mojito, even Hungarian barack pálinka brandy, all imbued with a moderate alcohol content. 18+ and less is the brainchild of local street-food entrepreneur Dániel Balogh, involved in innovative eateries such as Pöriző, a retro-style kiosk selling beef stew wrapped in a pancake.

A selection of 18 different ice creams features at 18+ and less, Balogh’s sweetest project set up for those who like their gelato with an intoxicating punch to it. Whether you swear by Russian vodka, Greek ouzo or Hungarian IPA beer, this ice-cream shop has it all, suitably set in Budapest’s District VII, surrounded by bustling nightlife.

Within the same locality, cocktail haven Bar Pharma has long been offering chilled delicacies infused with alcohol, but its tipple-based ice-cream selection is not as wide as the one at this Akácfa utca hangout. Varieties here include Secret Garden, made with pink peppercorn, parsley, lemon and its main ingredient, gin. Then there is Russian Flower, with a base of Russian Standard vodka, beetroot and passion fruit.

Ice cream containing Jack Daniel’s combines it with dark chocolate and chilli. But you can also walk away with a cone full of Unicum Plum, rosé spritzer or apricot pálinka – ice creams can’t get more Hungarian than this. For a frozen cocktail experience, go for a scoop of Tequila Sunrise or Mojito. A ball of ice cream with booze costs around 400 forints.

Half a litre of alcohol is concocted with five litres of ice cream, making it almost impossible to get you intoxicated. Well, almost. Meanwhile, those who are under legal drinking age can order chocolate with pomegranate, strawberry-vanilla with chia seeds, and chewing-gum flavoured fantasies, all free from alcohol.

And when summer is over, Balogh plans to restructure the business for the new season, offering mini cakes layered with American pancakes. Drenched in adequate amounts of Piña Colada sauce, this treat will also be geared towards alcohol aficionados, of course.
