The world’s greatest adventure films will be attracting an adrenaline-seeking crowd to a downtown Budapest theater in April. Showing award-winning films and audience picks from the 2017 Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival in Canada, the Hungarian leg of the world tour presents 13 documentaries, including several mini movies and longer features at the Corvin Cinema.
Films include My Irnik, presenting a young Montreal father moving to the Canadian Arctic and his method of teaching his son about the ancient traditions of their northern homeland. Meanwhile, Loved By All: The Story of Apa Sherpa gives a glimpse into the bittersweet life of a Nepalese mountaineer who has climbed Mount Everest 21 times.
In Stumped, Maureen Beck shows incredible endurance as an inveterate climber who has never let the fact that she is missing her lower left arm hold her back. Winner of the Best Short Film, Johanna presents stunning visuals of a freediver submerging for four minutes into the calming environment below the ice, eventually helping her to heal her injuries. Most of the films screen in English with Hungarian subtitles, with one mini movie playing in French. Tickets for the event can be purchased online at the Banff website or at the Corvin Cinema.
Taking place at the same movie theater where the Banff Festival takes place, the annual REEL ROCK Tour presents four of the best climbing films of the year on April 9th and 10th. This event, highly anticipated by the climbing community, presents three movies that are also submitted for the Banff Festival (Above the Sea, Stumped, Safety Third) and one special feature that will only be showing for REEL ROCK: Break on Through follows the adventures of Margo Hayes, a little-known 19 year old from Boulder, Colorado, determined to become the first woman to achieve and conquer grade 5.15, the top of the difficulty scale in high-end rock climbing.
