In the far west of Hungary tucked behind Austria, the historic city of Sopron is filled with Gothic and Baroque charm, surrounded by the outdoor attractions of Lake Fertő which extend across the border. Within easy reach are the notable landmarks of the Széchenyi Mansion in Nagycenk and Eszterházy Castle in Fertőd, as well as the spa destination of Bükfürdő. These all provide ample reason to visit the region in winter, when local Kékfrankos wine can be sampled in traditional cellars.

A recently produced English-friendly video, commissioned by the Hungarian Tourism Agency and provided to We Love Budapest, focus on the winter attractions of Sopron&Lake Fertő.

After a visit to the steaming spa waters at Bükfürdő, we’re taken around the historic center of Sopron, all Gothic spires and Baroque façades. On the edge of town, the Harrer chocolate factory welcomes visitors for demonstrations on how this divine product is created.

From there, we move on to the unspoiled nature and wildlife around Fertő, before being invited to admire the Széchenyi Mansion at Nagycenk and Eszterházy Castle.

How to get there from Budapest:Trains leave Keleti Station every one or two hours for Sopron, journey time 2hrs 30min. From Sopron, either change at Fertőszentmiklós for Fertőd or take the regular bus, journey time 45min.
