City Park has always been a quintessential part of Budapest, providing a home for Heroes’ Square, multiple museums, the Széchenyi Bath, the Budapest Zoo, and numerous sports events. During this summer’s FINA World Championships, a new outdoor hangout, Zöld Küllő, opened here by Vajdahunyad Castle to further enhance the community feeling of this green oasis, providing a perfect place for everyone from bikers to office workers to families with four-legged friends.
“A transformer operated here previously, which was later turned into an office, and then we created Zöld Küllő here in a really short time, in only eight to ten days, so instead of a soft opening we could launch it with a hard opening straight away,” says László Szekula, who is one of the owners (with Ferenc Dallos), already known from MészárSteak. The restaurateurs wanted a simple place, where there are literally no boundaries. The name, Zöld Küllő (translates to: European green woodpecker), refers to one of the most beautiful birds that nests in City Park.
Some of the hooligan- and weather-proof furniture was made from recycled materials, but guests can also sit on the grass on a blanket and order something from the sophisticated drink list (Zöld Küllő is more of a restaurant than a pub), or from the constantly expanding menu. The menu boasts burgers, grilled fish, and the place’s special salad, but the Belgian sour-cherry beer (Mort Subite Kriek, 850 HUF) is truly popular in the summer.
The deliberately simple bistro-like kitchen builds on street food, but in the near future, many other tasty meals will also be featured on the menu. Most of the courses cost about 1,400 forints, like the roasted sausage with mustard and a homemade roll. The sausage is slightly spicy and not at all fatty, thus making it a perfect choice for a light lunch in the summer, as is the salad served with deep-fried rib strips and smoked cheese (1,890 HUF). In sizzling heat, these meals are just enough to be satisfying without leaving diners overstuffed.
However, if you prefer a more hearty meal, we recommend the burger made of pork and beef (1,400 HUF), and the melt-in-the-mouth hake (1,890HUF) that comes with homemade bread and pickles. It is also worthwhile to try their characteristic organic “green coffee”.
Looking towards the future, Zöld Küllő will soon offer lunch specials, and they are planning to establish a bike-repair workshop for cyclists. Furthermore, live music will enhance the atmosphere of City Park’s newest hangout in the near future, awaiting everyone who leaves the concrete jungle behind for a charming green oasis.
