In our weekly series “The Saturday Gig”, we highlight one special performance happening on Saturday night in Budapest – if you have no plans, you do now!

Odett concert at Gödör Klub – December 30th, 8pm

THE MUSICIAN: With powerful vocal talent that expressively envelops a wide range of pop harmonies, esteemed Magyar songstress Odett Polgár is one of the brightest rising stars of Hungary’s modern music scene. Odett’s prolific repertoire shines with uplifting energy, whether she is singing a heartfelt ballad accompanied only by a single guitar or belting out an electronica-infused track for blasting across nightclub dance floors. In 2016, Odett’s fun-loving English-language rocker “Be With You” was the official anthem of that summer’s Sziget Festival, and she has come close to representing Hungary at the annual Eurovision song contest multiple times; Odett will compete for this honor again with her freshly released song “Aranyhal” (“Goldfish” in Hungarian) in 2018.

THE VENUE: Attracting crowds of music fans with quality concerts and cool DJ sets for over 15 years now, Gödör Klub originally occupied the city-center mega-club space under Erzsébet Square that now houses Akvárium Klub. While Gödör Klub’s current site deep within the Central Passage promenade on Király Street is not nearly as prominent as its former locale, this remains one of Budapest’s best venues for shows by living-legend Magyar musicians along with up-and-coming talents.

THE SHOW: For this blowout pre-New Year’s Eve party, two notable Hungarian groups will be warming up the stage for
Odett: Székesfehérvár’s Indigó Utca alternative-music ensemble, and Junkie Jack Flash – a Pécs-based band playing original songs influenced by rock of the ’70s and ’80s. Odett will almost certainly be singing her new material, so this show could sell out quickly after her legions of local fans arrive; check out the concert’s Facebook event for more details.
