There are always so many happenings to choose from in Budapest – exhibitions, parties, live music, festivals, and more – but here is our pick of the bunch for the imminent 72 hours or so:

Friday

10am - 11pm: Festival of Folk Arts at the Buda Castle

Unique handmade pieces of jewelry, wooden musical instruments, ornate pottery, fine fabrics, fashion accessories, and many other interesting Magyar-made craft items are all available for purchase amid a truly historical setting, the Buda Castle, during this festival celebrating Hungarian folk arts during August 17-20. This year’s festival focuses on colorful and creative Hungarian embroidery, one of the richest and most varied branches of folk arts.

6:30pm - 11:59pm: Hungarians On The Roof Presents: Jupiter’s Moon at Corvin Club

Budapest Rooftop Cinema screens a Hungarian film with English subtitles on Friday, Jupiter’s Moon. In the film, a Syrian refugee, Aryan, is shot at the Serbian-Hungarian border while trying to escape, and for some reason gains superpowers: not only does he stay alive, but becomes able to fight the power of gravity by levitating anytime he wants. The doctor of the refugee camp, whose career went off track due to a deadly medical-malpractice incident, soon decides to exploit Aryan’s extraordinary abilities. However, the policeman who shot Aryan rightfully worries about having to account for his deed, and starts chasing both the refugee and the doctor. More details

7pm - 11pm: Next Level / Denzel Curry (USA) at Akvárium Klub

One of the most iconic figures of contemporary rap music, America’s Denzel Curry, performs in Budapest for the first time ever on Friday. The resident DJs of Next Level – a Hungarian party-organizing group – the Dublic twins, B’Andre, Skrude, and Sammie Beats all spin discs on this special evening. More details

7pm - 2am: Pepsi Black Nights at Kopaszi Dam

On Friday, Pepsi Black Nights awaits partygoers at a truly amazing location, a ten-acre public park embraced all around by the Danube. The atmosphere will be enhanced with TEREM’s high-quality sound system, and a pop-up bar offering delicious drinks and snacks. More details

10pm - 5am: Bed Beach White Party Classic at RIO

10am - 5pm: Gardrób Community Market at Dürer Kert

We all have heaps of clothing that are not the right fit anymore, or we know we are never going to wear again, but they are just too nice to be thrown out. That is what this market is for. The idea is simple: you bring the clothes, bags, accessories, and other knickknacks, and the organizers guarantee the venue and the community. More details

10pm - 4am: Meeting of Styles at Ellátó Kert

Inspired by passion for graffiti, Meeting of Styles is an international network of artists that aims to provide a platform for an artistic community to communicate, exchange ideas and skills, and support intercultural exchange. MOS sponsors graffiti mural creation events in over 16 countries, with an aim to promote and legitimize the art form. 10am - 8pm: Vodka Festival at Millenáris

Budapest closes the summer with a spectacular party at Millenáris, as the first ever Vodka Festival is held in the Hungarian capital during August 19-20. A total of almost 40 kinds of vodkas, cocktails, two stages, exciting programs, and a truly challenging vodka labyrinth await everyone at this two-day festival. More details

7:30pm - 9pm: Porto 35mm at Toldi Cinema

Porto 35mm presents a true, real, life-changing, and devastating love between two outsiders, Jake and Mati, who spend one unforgettable night together. A mystery remains about the moments they shared, and in searching through memories, they relive the depths of a night uninhibited by the consequences of time. All day, August 20th: St. Stephen’s Day national holiday

August 20th is a national holiday in Hungary, when the country honors its founding king, St. Stephen – who was crowned in AD 1000 – with fantastic festivities and spectacular fireworks. Solemn ceremonies and open-air performances are held on this special day nationwide, but the biggest St. Stephen’s Day blowout is always in Budapest, where fantastic fireworks light up the night above the Danube soon after sunset. In the morning, a flag-rising commemoration is held at the Parliament, while religious rituals are observed at the St. Stephen’s Basilica in the afternoon, and a ceremony of cutting Hungary’s birthday cake is also held during this all-encompassing fiesta of Magyar patriotism. 10am - 11pm: Pool &Live at Vituki Beach, Kvassay Jenő Square 1

On the national holiday of the foundation of the Hungarian state, the whole city will be crammed with people to the fullest. If you prefer something calmer and more chilled-out, you can head to this cool pool party, and enjoy ice-cold drinks, plunging into the pool, live music, and DJs all afternoon, amid a fun-filled atmosphere. 12pm - 12am: 360 Bar presents: “Secret Garden” Special Edition s01e02 at 360 Bar
