At Sunday’s BAFTA ceremony, the Oscar-winning Holocaust drama “Son of Saul” earned first prize for “Best Film Not in the English Language”, making it the most acclaimed Hungarian movie of all time. The award was presented to Magyar director László Nemes during the 70th British Academy Film Awards at London’s Royal Albert Hall. We congratulate Nemes and his cast and crew for their continuing success, and we look forward to Nemes’s upcoming film, “Sunset”, a thriller-drama portraying the life of a young woman in Hungary during the era just before World War I, currently being made in Budapest.

Finishing ahead of Dheepan, a French refugee story by Jacques Audiard, and Pedro Almodóvar’s Julieta, Magyar director László Nemes received the award for his poignant Holocaust drama at Sunday’s BAFTA ceremony in the “Best Film Not in the English Language” category. Film-industry professionals have been praising the riveting Hungarian feature film with several prominent awards, including at last year’s Oscar Gala, when the film earned the prestigious golden statuette for Best Foreign Language Film; earlier Son of Saul received a Golden Globe award in the same category, following their success with the Grand Prix prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015. By making a clean sweep of the world’s most prestigious cinematic prizes, Son of Saul is now considered as Hungary’s most successful film ever made.

However, earning continuous praise for his highly esteemed historical drama didn’t stop Nemes from looking ahead and pursuing fresh projects: as he describes in the BAFTA video above, the director is already working on his next movie, called Sunset – a thriller-drama about a young woman in Hungary’s pre-World War I era, which is currently being made in Budapest, and is set to debut on the big screen in 2018. Furthermore, we have high hopes that Hungary’s international cinematic success will continue at the 2017 Academy Awards ceremony happening later this month, when the short film Sing by Hungarian director Kristóf Deák may win an Oscar for “Best Live Action Short Film”.
