Providing fast access between central Budapest and many of its surrounding communities, the city’s far-reaching HÉV suburban-railway network is essential to countless local commuters and day trippers – but over recent years, the system’s dilapidated green trains have deteriorated into rolling relics. However, new plans to modernize the passenger cars include a more vibrant external design, while the wagons’ interiors will feature air conditioning, electrical outlets, and even free Wi-Fi, according to Hungary’s Index news portal.

The renovation of these HÉV trains – all of them 30 to 40 years old – will include painting the exteriors with a much lighter shade of green, while the cars’ interiors will be equipped with new seats and handrails, an information display showing the names of upcoming stations, and a special docking stations for travelers’ bicycles.

The prototype of the renovated HÉV trains is already complete and parked in the network’s Szentendre depot.

The renovated HÉV cars are expected to be complete and put into service in late spring or early summer of 2016, and we look forward to riding them to the artist’s village of Szentendre, the royal palace of Gödöllő, and – of course – to and from the Sziget Festival!
