On 17 March incredible lights filled the night sky over some parts of Hungary. In a rare event - the last of which took place some 10 years ago - the sky formations of the Northern Hemisphere, officially called the Aurora Borealis, made a beautiful light show over Hungary. Here are some of the stunning images that capture the rare Northern Lights over Hungary as compiled on Időkép.hu

The incredible natural lights were visible at some points above Hungary, for example at the Pilis Hills near Budapest. The extravagant celestial scenes were caused by explosions on the surface of the sun that generated magnetically charged particles in outer space that collided with Earth's atmosphere. It's rare for the Northern Lights to be visible in Hungary, and it was particularly spectacular in spots where there is low light pollution. Luckily Időkép.hu and some others living in the regions, that were treated to this incredible light display, were able to capture these images for us to enjoy, so that we too can see the Northern Lights over Hungary.
