The long-postponed renovation of the metro line M3 has reached an important milestone: the tender for the renovation of certain stations has closed. The winning applicant triumphed with a design that will evolve existing buildings, with its designs for the Arany János Street and Pöttyös Street stations, and with its attempt to create a uniform concept. Works are expected to begin at the end of 2015.

The M3 renovation project was launched in late 2014 and applicants were invited to submit their designs by 20 January 2015. Altogether four tender applications arrived and all were in compliance with the prerequisites and the rough architectural concept. The designs had to include renovation plans for given stations of the metro line M3, as well as plans for the new above ground stations of the proposed northern extension of the line.

The applications were judged on the basis of the following points: functionality, harmony with the urban landscape, the usability of pedestrian routes, viability (technical features, construction technology), economic factors (cost efficiency, durability, maintenance costs), eco-consciousness and the transparency of the designs.

In large part because of its designs for the Arany János Street and the Pöttyös Street stations, the winner of the tender has proven that the existing buildings can be transformed to become functionally and architecturally modern. The winner also suggested highly creative architectural solutions through the proposed evolution of an existing building at the Klinikák station. The winner's design for the possible future Óceánárok Street station (District IV) is also noteworthy.

The designer will be responsible for the building permit plans and the construction designs, as well as for managing the building permit process. This might take place at the end of 2015 or at the beginning of 2016.
