There are many street food vendors throughout Budapest and we can all be proud of Hungary's "national street food” called lángos. But now we can finally report that there's something new and truly unique in Budapest's street food scene. The first street food court, Karaván Budapest, has launched with 10 kiosks; and this cool new spot is right near Szimpla Kert, so we expect this will soon be a very popular spot to grab a bite to eat.
While the Rákóczi Street end of Kazinczy Street has become very popular with tourists over the past few years, many locals have lost touch with the area. But this might soon change with a new reason for tourists and locals alike to head to this central part of the VII district.
The original plan of Karaván was to put just one lángos stand in a smaller parking lot near Szimpla Kert, but the authorities did not want to give two permanent parking spots for just one street food stall. They said that they were only open to the idea if the concept was to rent and fill the whole courtyard. The idea took hold and soon the team behind Karaván gave birth to the concept of a courtyard filled with street food stalls, similar to an open air food court.
Karaván is housed in a festival-like heated tent, functioning as a street food court with 10 kiosks. The now fenced, large rear garden will serve as a community garden in the future, where we can eat our burger or lángos under the starry sky.
The kiosks are well-known and beloved catering units (including some that have only attended festivals and street food shows so far), they include Berlin Canteen, Paneer, Le crépe, Pasta Station, Mangalica és társa, Parázs, Vespresso, Zing Burger, a bar that prepares hot drinks, and of course Lángos Máshogy - the stand that was the reason behind the whole idea.
