Interesting stories, decoding tasks, food and drink tastings, insider information and thematic walks – these are the most important elements of an alternative sightseeing tour. If these themes are all present, just like in the case of Rent a Trabant Budapest, than the tourist can feel satisfied. Retro cafés, socialistic architecture, memories of the change of the regime inside and outside the city, hobbling, chuffing and a two-stroke engine. We were longing for such things so we went on a Trabant journey and we enjoyed it very much.
One thing in common
Different modules of themes and places can be chosen but there is one thing that connects all of the tours and that is the Eastern-German wonder car. We chose a ride that was organized in association with Underguide Budapest and we discovered the retro must-sees in the city. We start at Ibolya, we discover the socialistic city centre, than as we follow the pathways of communism we make our way to Buda with metro. The tour goes on from the Moszka tér (known as Széll Kálmán tér) to Marxim, but that’s another chapter.
Comrade, have a drink!Marxim is the best place to have a drink or get a CCCP IZZA. Have a cool Marxim lemonade as well, you’ll need the extra energy for the following 2 or 3 hours. At least 4 wheels, a 2-storke engine and a driver will be there to help you on your way.
Two passengers can get in every Trabant and off they go to Citadella.
One statue is not a statue, especially when it’s fake so we make our way to the Memento Park.
We chill out in the Trabants, we take a look around through the car windows, we check out the Stalin statues and we enjoy the culture of the old days surrounded by the memories of the old days.
Tourists, on your marks!Right after the tour there is one last challenge, the driving challenge. The drivers and the passengers switch seats, the drivers give a 30-minute long lesson with a few instructions on how to drive Trabant and the race begins. Each and every passenger has a chance to show their driving skills – slaloming, accelerating and parking down as fast as you can, and this is what this mini race is about. Racers receive a diploma after successfully accomplishing the challenge but after that it’s time to go back to the city.
We enjoyed the tour very much – we found out that Trabants never give up and we also realized that people happen to stare at these old cars and not just because of their very distinct colours.
