Everyone has to start the day with something meaningful, filling and tasty, however not too many people have the time and the inspiration to cook in the morning. In this case, a typical Hungarian breakfast is the way to go! Grab some fresh bread and meat, slice up some vegetables, or make toast and put creamy things on it! It’s all up to you! You’ll see that Budapest looks a lot nicer in the morning with your stomach filled.

Májkrém (it literally means liver cream) goes very well with both fresh bread and toast. The spicy cream is one of the most common sandwich ingredients in Hungary. It can be bought in most of the stores in Budapest.
It’s important to keep in mind that májkrém is not the same the famous (and quite expensive) Hungarianlibamáj (goose liver) that is also a coulinary advanture.

You can also have túró (Hungarian quark, or cottage cheese) which is something like fresh cheese, that was warmed, soured and strained. It is really tasty in both sandwitches and salads, but they also can be used for making cheese cakes or pancakes. There is a kind of special túró with chopped onions, pepper, tomatos and paprika called kőrözött.
If you come across some eggplants in your kitchen you can easily make eggplant cream too. You only have to grill the eggplant, coup up the soft parts and flavour.

The last but not least, there’s something called greavel cream in Hungary. Greavel is basically rendered animal fat that people eat quite often for breakfast with whatever they want, but sometimes when they get tired of chewing, they turn it into salty greavel cream. Salami is one of the most famous cold cut in Hungary. It’s sort of a spiced, smoked and ripened bar of meat with a very unique taste.

Sausages are also very popular and preferred when it comes to eating something simple and fast. Sausages can be boiled, fresh, dried, or smoked. They can be eaten as cold cuts on sandwitches or used as an extra taste for main courses.

There is a special kind of boiled sausage called

hurka . There are two kinds: one made of liver and rice (májas hurka) one made of cooked and dried blood and rice with salt, pepper and spices (véres hurka).

Another food that many Hungarians like sliced on their sandwitches is beef tongue. The good thing about it that it doesn’t look like a tongue at all after it’s cooked, flavoured and cut.

Disznósajt (pig cheese) is a name of the food that has nothing to do with milk. It is made of meat jelly, meat slices of different origin, spices and other things we don’t want to know.Have guests, surprise a loved one, eat with forkOf course the number one villásreggeli (literally breakfast with fork) is made out of eggs. Scrumbled eggs and omlettes are very popular as the first meal of the day, mainly with hungarian spices like paprika and vegetables like onions.

Or, you can make deviled eggs in just 10 minutes, sprinkle them with paprika, and serve them with toast, onion slices, mustard and that slice of fried chicken breast that remained from the prevoius day.

Pancakes are also great options if you want to start the day with a sweet taste in our mouths. But be careful! In Hungary we make very thin pancakes, we fill them with thick hungarian jam, dark chocholate sauce or pudding and we roll them up.
