Most students can afford to rent rooms in student hostels or private apartments, so there are close to the ‘party zone’. The four biggest universities are the Corvinus, BME (Budapest University of Technology and Economics) ELTE (Eötvös Loránd University) and SOTE (Semmelweis University). There are several foreigner students attending these famous universities, and some of those foreign schools established particularly for them like IBS (International Business School) or CEU (Central European University).
University PubsIn the article about Downtown Cheap Pubs, we have already introduced the top ten pubs in the downtown area. These are the regular haunts of many young people, but students of different universities usually go to different places to have a glass of beer after the lessons. In the surroundings of Corvinus there are some favorite pubs like Jópipa pub with its socialist ambiance, the Trapéz, which has an alternative atmosphere, the Corvinus Café with a cellar, the Kicsi with hookahs and Gabi Presszó, which is very cozy. The raunchy Havas Presszó and Csarnok are for the bravest and the smoky Pedál pub or the trendy Coffeshop are for the demanding ones.
On the other side of the Danube, students of BME spend their time and play fooseball in the Ars Presszó of Martos Flóra Dormitory, or have some beer in the ‘Icsa’ alias Italcsarnok (literally means Drinking Hall), or in the Popcorner Pub. Szertár Pub is a popular place on the BEAC (Athletics Club of the Universities of Budapest) sports ground in the surroundings of Infopark Budapest. In the Vásárhelyi Pál Dormitory, the most popular place is the Drönk, where you can take part in the very famous and wild ‘Palibácsi’ memorial evenings on every other Wednesday.On the Southern Buda side of the ELTE campus, students usually meet in the above-mentioned pubs like ICSA, Popcorner or Szertár. Nearby the campus, the Kocka Pub is cool during the summer with its benches. In Kamra Pub, there are ‘get-togethers’ every now and then. Dormitory parties are held mainly in the Kőrösi Csoma Sándor Dormitory of the ELTE, which is a quite raunchy place, but with special guests of the ‘90s like Kozmix or Dj Sterbinszky, you can bet a good party. There are similar events in the Grund Hostel as well.
The buildings of the Semmelweis Medical University are in Üllői Street, so students usually visit the pubs in the 8th or the 9th district. Medikus Pub is right there for example opposite the street. Vaskapu and Zöld Macska pubs are very popular ones because both of them are quite spacious and cheap. Vaskapu is in Szentkirályi Street and Zöld Macska can be found on Üllői Street. The elegant Zappa and Füvészkert are for the more demanding people to have a cup of coffee. Frisco Pub in Mátyás Street and Ali Baba pub are the cheaper ones, where you can get a glass of wine for 80 HUF.Student ClubsWhere can we get completely drunk without spending a lot, have fun until sunrise and dance for the top songs on a Sunday or even a Tuesday night? There are some bigger places in the downtown attracting several teenagers as well, if they are lucky enough to get in. They are famous for their VERY favorable drink sales like the strong cocktails of Morrison's pub for 500 HUF or the free beer and tequila coupons in School club.There are five of these party places aiming mainly students of universities in the downtown. The Morrisons Opera and its ‘bigger brother’ the Morrisons 2 near the Vígszínház, Morrison Közgáz, which is the former School Club in the Corvinus University cellar, the Living Room club half way between Astoria and Ferenciek Square and last but not least the Könyvtár Club in Trefort kert.
