Just a few steps from the party district, near Klauzál Square on Wesselényi Street, you’ll find 3AT Burger — a tiny yet stylish spot serving American-style street food. Their menu focuses on smashburgers, offered in classic, extra and seasonal versions.

At 3AT Burger, the walls are decorated with hand-painted American football art, and the TV often shows live games while you wait. Even the dishes take their names from the sport, adding to the playful theme.

The name 3AT refers partly to their motto — eat, enjoy, experience — and is pronounced “Eat Burger”. It also nods to the owners, Timi and Ádám, who dreamed up and opened the place together.

Both owners have a long background in hospitality, with nearly a decade of experience across the industry — from elegant restaurants to more laid-back bistros. As big fans of smashburgers themselves, they stayed optimistic despite the growing number of similar spots in the city, and finally opened their own place this February. Locals from nearby offices are already regulars, and tourists also find their way here thanks to the excellent reviews.

I eat a burger here every day — in a way, I opened this place for myself, Timi jokes. But really, we wanted to create somewhere that raises the bar in terms of quality — a spot we’d happily sit down in ourselves or order from at any time.

– Ádám adds with a laugh.

Wesselényi Street brings in plenty of tourists, of course, but thankfully we have regulars too — some we can already guess their order before they even walk through the door,

– Timi adds.

Fresh, quality ingredients and signature sauces

What really sets them apart in Budapest’s crowded smashburger scene is the focus on quality and their signature sauces. The buns come from bakeries in Gödöllő and District XVI — fresh, soft potato buns that hold together beautifully without being too dense. The meat is sourced from a farmer in Szada, using 80–85% pure beef, and they never work with frozen products. You can taste the quality immediately: the patty is juicy, well-seasoned and develops a gorgeous crispy crust when smashed on the grill. Fresh vegetables arrive from Érd, and if you prefer your burger without raw or pickled greens, that’s an option too. Prices remain surprisingly reasonable for the quality, ranging from HUF 1,590 to 3,333.

The sauces are their own creations, and they’re currently testing a new one — a cheese sauce planned to go on the fries. There are always seasonal options as well; at the moment there’s a mushroom sauce, and from December a ginger–tomato version joins the line-up. Our personal favourites are the chipotle mayo and the classic BBQ sauce.

All the classic burgers come in a toasted potato bun with double meat and double cheddar, and you can choose between tomato–batavia lettuce or onion–pickles — or skip the greens entirely and go for a simpler version with just their house sauce. Naturally, there are extras on the menu too. We loved the fried onion ring–bacon combo in the Falcons, and the jalapeño–chipotle pairing in the Bills for a spicy kick. And if you’re really hungry, the 3x3 is the one to order: three patties, triple cheddar and double pickles, all served in a slightly larger brioche bun.

Seasonal specials and the month’s favourite

Just like with their sauces, they regularly introduce seasonal burgers as well. The Browns comes with a mushroom cream, while the BL Titan’s features a rich bacon sauce. We also loved their new December burger — one we’ll definitely return for this month, as it’s available until New Year’s Eve. This time, the beef is wrapped in a New York roll made by their partner bakery, and the tomato–ginger sauce brings a subtle festive note to the flavour.

Beyond the burgers: from breakfast to dessert

You can order sides or opt for a menu, pair your meal with a free-refill soft drink, or choose from their selection of craft beers. And for something sweet, don’t miss the KitKat-filled doughnut or the caramel cheesecake. These started out as limited-time specials, but guests loved them so much they’ve become permanent fixtures.

They also serve breakfast from 10.30am to 12.30pm, offering options like various toast combinations, fried eggs with bacon and maple-syrup pancakes, as well as savoury muffins.

A great location on Wesselényi Street alone wouldn’t be enough to make a smashburger spot this popular — it also takes quality ingredients, a positive attitude, real expertise and a genuine love for hospitality. After selling more than 100,000 burgers and receiving countless glowing reviews, Timi and Ádám are preparing for a big step next year: they’ll soon open a second, larger venue in the city centre. Meanwhile, their Wesselényi Street shop is celebrating its first birthday in February with a refreshed look, a new (and still secret) product and a small redesign that will add 6–8 indoor seats. They do offer delivery, but it’s worth visiting in person to try the burgers fresh. Inside, there are only one or two seats for now, but the outdoor terrace is covered and heated, complete with blankets and a heater — making it a cosy spot even in colder months.
