In Hungary’s deep south near the border with Serbia, Szeged is a treasure of Art Nouveau façades, backdropped by the bucolic Tisza and its tranquil embankment. As well as relaxing walks, the river also provides the fish which features on so many menus here, either in the famed spicy soup or in new-wave dishes at contemporary restaurants. Sightseeing is as pleasurable as dining here, with plenty of fascinating museums and attractions in and around town. Spa tourism is a major draw, both for health reasons and family-friendly entertainment.

With striking camera work around Szeged’s atmospheric streets, a new English-subtitled video, provided to We Love Budapest by the Hungarian Tourism Agency, captures the autumn mood of the city and its surrounding cultural attractions.

We also visit Ópusztaszer, site of the National Heritage Park and the historic Feszty Panorama, the galleries and museums of Hódmezővásárhely, and the best spas in the region.

How to get there from Budapest: Trains leave Nyugati Station for Szeged every hour, journey time two-and-a-half hours.
