In the far west of Hungary, tucked inside the border with Austria, Sopron is a lively town gleaming with Gothic, Baroque and Art Nouveau architecture, and towering landmarks. On a fine day, you can even see the Alps from its famed Fire Tower. Around Sopron, vineyards and lakeside recreation around Lake Fertő make this the perfect destination for autumn. Factor in sightseeing around the former haunts of the noble Eszterházy dynasty, fine local cuisine and several spa centers, and you have a recipe for a great weekend getaway.

Stunningly shot from the air, within chic restaurant interiors and around tranquil Lake Fertő, a new English-subtitled video, provided to We Love Budapest by the Hungarian Tourism Agency captures the best that Sopron and surroundings have offer this autumn.

;t=10s Highlights include a panoramic view of Sopron’s Fire Tower and elegant church towers, a tour around Fertőrákosi Quarry and its striking geological features, and a visit to one of the area’s many family-friendly spas. Look out, too, for the grand sweep of the Eszterházy Castle at Fertőd, often compared to Versailles.

How to get there from Budapest: Trains leave Keleti Station for Sopron every two hours, journey time two-and-a-half hours.
