A stone’s throw from Kálvin Square, the Adna looks no different from any of the many cafés around here. In a spacious room, people are reading, chatting or studying their laptops, sipping hot drinks, nibbling a sandwich, maybe taking each other on at Dixit, a popular fantasy card game. The only difference is that the Adna is the café outlet of the Reformed Church Drug Mission and here, there’s no alcohol served.

It’s not by chance that the Adna Café is a flagship venue for the Dry November Challenge, a nationwide sobriety initiative. Anyone who has ever tried to enjoy a kicking night out with friends while trying to resist the temptations of the bar can testify that it’s no easy matter. Drink is very much part of our social life and very few places can be trusted not to serve alcohol. Adna is one of them – and they won’t try to force any religious philosophy or anti-drugs propaganda on you.

The café is more an alternative to the party madness in nearby District VII – but provides information rehabilitation issues if you need it. Otherwise, you’re free to sip decent coffee and chat with your friends. They also serve plenty of booze-free alternatives to popular alcoholic drinks, and a row of loose-leaf teas stands in bottles on the counter.

The choice of hot chocolate is lavish. And if you’re hungry, you can opt for an omelette, scrambled eggs, quesadillas or sandwiches, with daily lunch offers too, recent examples being bánh mi Vietnamese sandwiches, orange pumpkin cream soup with croutons, whole-wheat quiche and Brassói roast with pickled cucumber. To complement, the selection is varied, including pumpkin-and-lavender latte, lemonades, vegan cup desserts, cheesecake, and oatmeal cookies.

Books and board games help you pass a lazy afternoon, while two or three events a week include literary and cultural evenings, craft workshops and concerts. The small farm can be rented for different purposes, while the terrace that is still in use for the interior garden offers exciting opportunities for the summer. The small room can be rented out for special events, the terrace remains in use at present and an inner garden comes into its own in summer.
