Mahart Passnave excursion boats leave Vigadó Square at 10.30am and stop at Batthyány Square ten minutes later. Boats, either 600-capacity or 250-capacity, have two decks and a buffet. During the 90-minute jaunt up to Szentendre, passengers head alongside Margaret Island, then Óbuda and the Roman Embankment, where families dine on the waterfront and rowers do battle with the Danube currents. After passing below dramatic Megyeri Bridge, the boat approaches the Danube Bend as Szentendre comes into view. Its cafés, restaurants, shops and galleries are a conveniently short walk from the docking station. Churches, such as Blagovestenska and Belgrade Cathedral, are also close, and echo local Serbian heritage. The journey back, with Budapest’s bridges all lit up, can be particularly magical.

Excursions run for the next four Saturdays, October 7-28 inclusive, single tickets 2,200 forints, return 3,300 forints, children 2-14 half-price. The all-day Saturday service starts up again in April. If you miss the boat this month, you can always take the Mahart Passnave Duna Corso that leaves Vigadó Square every hour on Saturdays between 11am and 7pm (2,990 HUF, children 1,490 HUF). The ride lasts 60 minutes and passes the main bridges in the city, with recorded commentary in 11 languages. The city also offers all kinds of other romantic cruises, with wine, dinner and live music.
